Mallacoota
On Monday the 4th of Feb we left Eden and drove
to Mallacoota which is just over the border in VIC. The van park we stayed in was the Foreshore Holiday Park which
was a massive park and I think it was council owned. They were very strict with
the rules and we could not take our van in till midday. So we pulled in and set
up. The sites were not big and just dirt sites. No grass. My rear wheel was
millimeters off the back sloping boundary of the site and the tow bar was
millimeters off the road. It could have been worse as Jan & Ross had water
views.
After set up and lunch we went out for a drive to check the
place out. We drove to Bastion Beach and other points south. We returned to
Bastion Beach for a swim but didn’t wind up swimming. It wasn’t all that
inviting a beach really. There was a seal laying on the beach soaking up the
warmth.
We then headed back into the lake area of the town. The lake
was called the Bottom Lake. There are plenty of jetties for the boaties. I
thought there would be a netted off area so that people could swim in the lake
or some sought of area designated for swimming but ther e wasn’t. There were
only signs prohibiting swimming around the jetties. We drove north along the
lake and still could not find a good spot for a swim. Then we went on to Gypsy
Point which was in the Top Lake. There is nothing there but an eco style
motel/cabin setup. The lake was beautiful, however, and I finally got that swim
I had been craving. It was good to cool off in the high humidity we were
having. I only saw the ‘no swimming’ sign after I got out.
We headed back to camp and had a happy hour with the view
from Jan & Ross’s site. The next morning was spent having a coffee and then
a fish in the lake, just down from our campsites. No good again with the
fishing.
It started raining in the afternoon and did not stop for
hours and hours. We started getting leaks (again) through our four seasons
hatches which was a real disappointment. Some followers of my blogs would
remember the hassles I have had with those leaks. I have sealed them a few
times and they have not leaked in the last 20 or so times it has rained but eventually
they keep failing. So till I get home and have another go at fixing them I will
have to use a couple of tarps on rainy days.
The next morning we were due to leave and there was nothing
at Mallacoota to keep us there unfortunately. It is a fishing town and unless
you have a boat there is not really anything else to do there. Certainly not
swimming and we joked about the Nazi no swimming attitude that seems to prevail
there.
