Cape Conran, Marlo & Orbost

On Wednesday morning the 6th Feb we left Mallacoota and headed down the road towards Lakes Entrance. We knew we would not be making it there as there were places to see on the way so we played it by ear as to where we stayed that night. We filled up with fuel at Cann River which was a cheap fuel stop and pulled over for coffee at a rest area further up the road.

We went on and turned off the highway for Cape Conran. It is a rugged bit of coastline there and only an eco motel and van park but we weren’t going to stay there anyway. We got out and had a look. There was this thick sea mist which was amazing.

I did a short walk around the cape.

We then moved on to Marlo, a very small town, and had lunch. The Snowy River flows out to the ocean at this spot so we had to have a look at that.

Cape Conran and Marlo are a detour off the Princes Highway and you follow the road to loop back to the Princes Highway at Orbost. Along that road are several free camps positioned right on the Snowy River. We checked them out but they were small with lots of overhanging gum trees. The wind was picking up with a possible storm predicted so those camps were not an option. At Orbost we checked out the free camp behind the Bottom Pub but it was only a good site for one of our rigs so we just checked in to the van park there.

After setup we had a walk around town and shopped. We had another walk in the morning.

I had a good chat with a neighbor, Glen, who was having trouble with his vehicle (not that I could help him with that problem). We got away at 10am. No rush as we only had 70km to go to Lakes Entrance. That late start was partially because of being slowed down by a warning light on the dash that my central diff was locked on and I could not get it off. I had to ring Toyota to check if it was an issue and work out how to get rid of it. That done we headed off to Lakes Entrance.
