Bass Valley Camping Ground, En-route to Mornington Peninsular


On Thursday the 14th Feb, we left Yanakie and headed for the Bass Valley Camping Ground near Poowong.  On the way we dropped in to Fish Creek and had a coffee. The reason we went there is that it rated a mention by the author in Lonely Planet about being a place worth visiting for its bohemian flavor. There was an art gallery. That was about it.

Further along the road we stopped at Meeniyan. There was a craft/fair thing happening on the weekend. There was a yard which displayed a large number sculptures, metal and wooden. They were amazing but we were not allowed to take any photos.
Then onto the free camp. The Bass Valley Camping Ground was surrounded by some beautiful farmland. It was a very windy and narrow road to get there but it wasn’t out of the way and it was sealed. It was a nice stay overnight.

We finished up at Sorrento on Wednesday the 20 th Feb and drove to Safety Beach where we would stay for the next three nights with friends, Jude and Greg. It was a short drive up Port Phillip Bay to their place. We met them when we stayed at Broome in 2015. They feature a fair bit in our blog from that trip, www.secondbigtrip.blogspot.com.au . On the first occasion we met them which was a dinner fundraiser for the RFDS at the van park we were in at Broome, they offered to pick us up from a place we were storing our van and vehicle whilst we flew back to Sydney and then pick us up from the airport when we returned and drive us out to pick up our van and vehicle. It was a 20km or more, round trip each time. That is the sort of great guys they are. After we left Broome we kept bumping into them at Karijini National Park and Cape Range National Park. Cape Conran, Marlo & Orbost

On Wednesday morning the 6 th Feb we left Mallacoota and headed down the road towards Lakes Entrance. We knew we would not be making it there as there were places to see on the way so we played it by ear as to where we stayed that night. We filled up with fuel at Cann River which was a cheap fuel stop and pulled over for coffee at a rest area further up the road. We went on and turned off the highway for Cape Conran. It is a rugged bit of coastline there and only an eco motel and van park but we weren’t going to stay there anyway. We got out and had a look. There was this thick sea mist which was amazing. I did a short walk around the cape. We then moved on to Marlo, a very small town, and had lunch. The Snowy River flows out to the ocean at this spot so we had to have a look at that.
